About Us

Kadoma, originally known as Gatooma, was established during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, following the colonization of Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia). The name "Gatooma" is believed to have been derived from the name of a local chief, Katuma, or from a term in the Shona language referring to the area’s hilly terrain.

The city’s development was fueled by the discovery of gold in the region, leading to the establishment of several gold mines. It became a key mining town, attracting settlers and workers from various regions. The growing mining industry prompted the construction of infrastructure, including railways and roads, to facilitate the transportation of minerals and goods.

Kadoma’s economy expanded with the growth of mining activities, particularly gold and copper mining. The Cam and Motor Gold Mine, one of the largest gold mines in Zimbabwe then, played a pivotal role in the town's economic development. Agriculture, particularly cotton farming, also became an important part of the local economy. Kadoma emerged as a commercial hub, providing services and goods to surrounding farming and mining communities. Today, Kadoma is a bustling urban center with a mix of historical significance and modern development. It is home to diverse communities and serves as a regional hub for trade, education, and healthcare.
